78 Johann Zoffany (next page) Academicians of the Royal Academy, 1771-2 The founding of the English Royal Academy by George III in 1768 was a significant moment for London artists. As with many such pivotal events, a portrait was commissioned to commemorate it. Zoffany himself and several other foreign artists were among the king’s specially selected founder members of the Royal Academy. Zoffany was adept at producing crowded group portraits like this one that nevertheless retained a sense of coherence and visual variety.
